Eli Lilly's "reinjections" may be the first company to bring an EpiPen to the U. S., the largest manufacturer of a new oral pen for chronic pain. (Eli Lilly is using the product to treat a painful muscle spasm that is the major cause of chronic pain.
The company will be offering the epiPen with a $15 price tag, and a free refill.
Lilly said the epiPen is a new version of a brand-name drug called Nexium. The patent for Nexium will expire in 2016. The company plans to file U. S. patent applications for the new product.
Lilly says that is a "provisional product".
"With Nexium, we believe the drug will work to treat symptoms of chronic pain, such as muscle spasms, pain in muscles, and other symptoms of a pain-related chronic pain," said Lilly's chief executive officer, David A. Schlosser.
The drug is sold under the brand name Protonix.
Lilly said that for the product, it is necessary to apply a high-dose, topical, anti-inflammatory drug such as Nexium for four weeks. Then, patients may begin to take the product on a weekly basis to reduce the pain.
The Nexium is an EpiPen for chronic pain.
A spokesperson for Pfizer Inc. said the company is currently conducting trials of the product.
Lilly is planning a new company-sponsored, annual EpiPen program.
